facebook and twitter at office

This is a guest post by Roberta Smith. If you would like to guest post on nimztech, Please check the guidelines.

Nowadays, we hear lots of stories like – an employee fired for badmouthing his boss on Twitter or a teacher suspended for badmouthing her principal on Facebook or an employee terminated for deprecation of his company’s brand on Twitter. There are so many things that can go wrong with Social media and workplace. So it’s better to read your company’s policy book thoroughly and attentively before being involved with any social media sites or doing things online which may be found offensive by your employer.

Following are some Tips to keep in your mind for safely using social networking sites while working.

01. Thoroughly read your company’s employee policies and use of internet

Internet is widely used in companies or offices for work. And you can get lots of information related to any topics from the net; either it is of job vacancies or using social media sites. In these situations, every company has set some rules and policies regarding the use of internet especially the social media usage. There are specific employee policies regarding internet that every employee have to follow. So it’s necessary to read all the instructions related to the “use of internet” policies of your company.

02. Keep your Personal Networking sites completely personal

Be Practical. Don’t inter-mix your personal and professional life. Although it is quite hard to forget your work even for some time and being only in your personal life; as you are spending so much time in your work place with the same people daily. But it’s important to draw a line between your professional and personal life to save you from all sides. Social media sites are very public now and don’t discuss work and co-workers related issues there.

03. Think again before adding your co-workers in your friend list

Try to keep your social media sites personal. Although it depends on your company and comfort with your co-workers but do not get too much involved with your co-workers in social media sites. Even you should be very careful of being connected with your co-workers on social community sites. As sometimes you share some inappropriate thing which might create problems in your professional life.

04. Use discretion while using social networking tool in your office

Social Networking sites are even more popular within your work place for work related issues. For example, some social media tools are specially designed for office use only like Yammer (very similar to Twitter). Don’t be so informal and relaxed while using your office social networking tool. Be tactful and don’t post anything personal there.

In the nut shell, Social media is growing very popular in the workplace and you have to use your common sense to guide your decisions in the right way to keep your personal and professional life safe and sound.

How to publish your Twitter tweets on your Facebook page ?

How to publish your Twitter tweets on your Facebook page ? Or do you still wonder how come your facebook friends write on their Facebook page via Twitter?

Maybe you want to share the same link you updated on twitter. If it automatically goes to your Facebook page, come on! It’s great as you don’t have to share the same link on Facebook again. It is the advantage.

There are two ways to publish Twitter tweets on Facebook

Enabling from Twitter account

This is the general way. Go to your Twitter account —> Settings

Go to Profile

Go to the bottom of the page. Click on “Post your Tweets to Facebook” button.

Click on “sign in to facebook and connect your accounts” button.

sign in to facebook and connect your accounts

It will identify your Facebook account if you have already signed in. If not you have to sign in to your Facebook account.

Then it will request permission.

request for permission

Right! You’re done. Click on “Save” to apply changes you made to your Twitter account.

With Selective Tweet Status

In my opinion I don’t like the general way. Because I don’t want to share all tweets on Facebook. There are some tweets I don’t want to publish on Facebook. Therefore I’d better go with something over which I have control.

There is a super Facebook application called Selective Tweet Status. Go to the application, type your Twitter user name and hit “Save” button.

Just add #fb at the end of your tweet which you want to set on Facebook.

Watch out! Social media criminals!

For the time being Social Media is doing a great job on internet whereas it is manipulated by some crooks to get done non-virtuous things. Therefore Social Media  has both pros and cons which is  the general scenario of anything modern in the contemporary world. As if you use a knife when you cook whereas the  same knife can be used to stab someone. Ok ! What if Facebook Twitter Myspace are deployed for bad purposes? To ban social media all over the world? No way. It’s not the solution. Those who misuse need to be punished under the law. Mind you! People have used Facebook and Twitter as the main source of communication in organizing crimes.

Here comes the most interesting part. Few weeks ago NYdailynews reported that NYPD has formed a new police unit to track those who abuse facebook, Twitter and Myspace to plan out crimes or to brag about their crimes. They may implement it with the support from social media.

How do you help them ?

Social media web sites have millions of users. As a user you are allowed to report anything appears suspicious to you. Not only the crimes, you can report anything threatening, pornographic that contains nudity, graphic or violence. By reporting these shady activities social media websites can trace them down with no trouble.

Do not mess with Facebook spam filters

Nowadays all websites are very strict to spammers. People spam more and more (I reported a new Facebook scam in this month). Facebook is exceptionally strict to uncommon behaviors. They are really concerned about users’ privacy. Therefore there are more possibilities that you can get banned or your account gets limited features, if any kind of uncommon behavior occurs by your end.

You have to go through spam filter if Facebook guesses you are trying to spam. You should be serious about this spam filters. If you keep entering wrong characters your facebook account gets banned or limited quickly.

The best thing to do when those words are not clear is to click on “Try different words” because sometimes  those captures are not readable. Remember Facebook is fully systematic whereas there is no human involvement in their procedures. Once your account gets banned, it’s impossible to get your account back.

Has my Facebook account been hacked?

OMG ! Is your Facebook account hacked ? Has someone stolen your Facebook password? Has Facebook banned your Facebook account? Do not worry because your guesses are wrong.

“Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.”

What this really means?

It says “due to a site issue” right? Therefore you have nothing to worry because it is Facebook’s issue. Maybe they are doing website maintenance or they are having a bandwidth issue due to huge traffic. It is reasonable because Facebook is the leading social network in the world. So Facebook has massive traffic.

How to solve this issue?

Your Facebook account will be up within couple of minutes. If you keep getting the same message after one hour try to login to your Facebook account from a different computer. If you are able to login, clear your computer’s cookies and cache and try to login. Then you will be fine.

How to clean your internet cookies and cache ?

Facebook is trying to attract more traffic.

Good traffic makes web site owners happy. I know that it’s not something new to you. If you have a good stream of traffic to your website, there are much more possibilities to earn money from it.Couple of months back, I heard that Facebook had massive traffic more than google did in United States. Do you think that Facebook will stop getting more traffic because they already have it hugely? No. Every website draws on more and more techniques to catch more traffic.

You can see Facebook is trying to attract more traffic by setting facebook as the homepage in browsers.

Get a notification if anyone logged in to your facebook account from somewhere

Facebook team work very hard to develop the Facebook everyday. Especially they are very particular about users’ privacy and security. Few days ago they introduced Social Authentication instead of using usual CAPCHA’s. Now they have developed another great feature to protect your facebook account.

This shows you from where you have logged in to Facebook recently. This is actually a tracking system. You can always get a notification to your email or to your mobile (as a text message) whenever a computer or a mobile device is logged in to your Facebook account. If you track down any suspicious activity you can immediately disconnect the suspicious activity by clicking on End activity and then you can go for a password change.

Facebook is going to say BYE for CAPTCHAs

Websites use CAPTCHAs to identity whether user is a human or a machine because hackers crashes websites and steal your information. Therefore CAPTCHAs are awesome solution for websites. But Facebook is going to give you an advanced and creative security solution instead of CAPTCHAs. Its called Social Authentication. This is still under experimentation. Facebook is going to test Social Authentication and collect user’s feedback soon.

What is Social Authentication ?

Someone can hack your password but they do not know who your friends are. Therefore Facebook is going to show you some friend’s pictures and ask you to name the person in those photos from 6 names.
