“Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close We are sorry for the inconvenience”

You probably have seen this error if you are a Windows XP user. Worse thing is this error disconnects your internet until you restart the computer. Other annoying thing is this error crashes your opened applications.

Good thing is it’s easy to solve the problem. You don’t have to use any third party software. I have seen some people pay couple of dollars to buy some small software to fix this issue.

You can see this error if you installed windows couple of days ago. But you can’t see this error if you have genuine windows and if you went through windows security updates.

We have two solutions.

1. Go to this link

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894391

This is called hotfix package. Chose your operating system.

choose-your-operating-system

Download the hotfix package. Install it and restart the computer.

Or

2. Go to these two links.

Download two files and install them. Restart the computer.

You won’t see that error 🙂

Thank you. I’m glad I could help sara.

  3. Crogerss says:

    Hi,
I have tried both of these solutions. However, when I try to download them, my computer says that whatever software I have on my computer is the latest version and it won’t let me download the new packages.
    Any thoughts?

    • Nimantha Dias says:

What is your operating system ?

      • Crogerss says:

        XP
        Version 2002
Service Pack 3 — I upgraded it to try and fix the problem, which did not work

        • Nimantha Dias says:

Usually Generic Host Process for Win32 error comes on only service pack 1 and 2. There is no security update for service pack 3 because Hotfix is compatible for only service pack 1 and 2. That’s why it says “computer has the latest version”. In my opinion it’s better to uninstall service pack 3 and then install hotfix on service pack 2. Let me know whether you fixed it or not.

          • Crogerss says:

I can’t uninstall the service pack. It does not show up in the ‘Add or Remove Programs’ applet.
Is there anything else that you can think of?

  4. Jovita says:

I have the same problem like Crogerss, windows didnt let me to download anything I’ve tried, I have Windows XP, Service pack 2, but somehow it just doesnt work… it says that there is no need to install the update, because service pack on my computer is newer than the one I am trying to download…

  5. Dee says:

Appreciate the effort to assist but this solution does not work for me either. I have sp3 and windows will not allow these patches to be installed and there is no way to roll back to sp2.

the generic host error message must be coming from somewhere else…..
